Reading a charging map like a local
How we spot a reliable stop from a dud before betting 40 miles of range on it.
Not every pin on a charging map is worth driving to, and learning to tell them apart saves range, time and a surprising amount of stress. It’s a knack we’ve been practising on every shakedown run before the big one.
Is it actually alive right now?
The most useful thing on any map isn’t the star rating, it’s whether the thing is working this minute. We check live availability in Electroverse and sanity-check it against the crowd reports in Zap-Map or the network’s own app. A charger someone plugged into an hour ago beats a glowing five-star review from last year that might have been kicked to bits since.
Match the connector, and the real speed
Look at the plug and the power the stall genuinely delivers, not the number painted on the side. Here’s the bit that matters for us: the Sealion can pull up to 230 kW on a proper high-power charger, so a 350 kW Ionity or Fastned post is well worth going out of our way for, it’ll pour in a huge chunk of range in the time it takes to grab a coffee. Stuck on a tired old 50 kW unit and we’ll be there a while, so we save those for a proper lunch stop rather than a quick splash-and-dash.
Lean on the networks that share one bill
Where we’ve got a choice, we point ourselves at chargers Electroverse covers, so the whole trip stays on one account and one bill. One less thing to think about at the end of a long day behind the wheel.
Always have a plan B
We never gamble our last 40 miles on a single charger. Pick the stop, then note the next one along as a fallback before you even pull away. Belt and braces, every single time.
